Mental Hardcore Health Newsletter #6 - Being Hardcore with Mental Health Problems

Mental Hardcore Health Newsletter #6

Being Hardcore with Mental Health Problems

Living your life with mental health problems is never easy. Opening up and talking to others about these - instead of trying to hide them away - is very hard for most people, too.
But there are some aspects that makes this even harder for Hardcore Heads with mental health issues.

Which is that Hardcore, the music, the people, the culture, pushes this image of being tough, rough, aggressive, bold, of dominance and power, of being a strong guy, a reckless maniac, with "balls of steel", death defiant and tenacious from head to toe.

Yet, if you are having problems like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder...
Well, let me put it this way: you don't feel very "Hardcore" if you run out of a supermarket in sweat & tears because you are having a panic attack.
Or if you can't move your feet out of bed because you're heavily depressed.
Or can't even return a phone call because of your social anxiety.

These things... make you feel more like being a wimp. a coward. frightened & soft. a weakling. not a person with balls, or ovaries, "of steel". not like like a hardcore avenger.

Now, this is problematic. Because how are you gonna deal with it?

It makes a lot of people attempt to hide away their problems. Projecting an image of being a tough gabber maniac to the outside world. while occasionally crumbling on the inside.
And all this makes it even harder for people who have mental health problems - especially when they are having very severe problems - to open up to others in the "scene", and talk freely about these things.

And this can lead to a situation when whole groups project the image of being a hard guy/girl/person to themselves and others, when actually a large percentage of them have these problems themselves.

How could we improve this situation?

First, the image of being a "macho terror killer" or some super tough gabber head without emotions and any weakness (except hate and anger) - you know what i mean - should be questioned.

in many cases this "being tough as nails", hardcore poser shit is a facade anyway, run by some big labels and small dorks; it's a marketing thing, similar to the "evil" metal bands or "violent" rap artists - and in these cases there is nothing behind it, it just appeals to the fools, ignore it.

why shouldn't you be a weak-ass nerd type with glasses and acne and a belly, that listens to gabber? for example.

that's the first... but it goes deeper than that. After all, there is a *rough* aesthetic and sentiment to hardcore - not just on a "poser" level. it's music with a quality of brutality, rebellion, defiance, roughness, domination, willpower... one can't deny that.

So.

let's just face the fact that life, humans, the world - are complicated. complex. varied. multiple, parallel and layered.

you can be tough, brutal, a rebel, a fear inducing techno ruffian - and still have a "wimpy", fearful side, that comes through in panic & melancholy.

your personality, psyche, and mind, is a cluster of content (or a labyrinth). fears, strengths, weaknesses, powers...
who cares, in the end!

having mental health issues does not make you any less "hardcore", or strong willed, or wall-breaking than others.
you can still be a fire walker. you can still be the storm.

so, my final advice:
try to accept all parts of your personality. your strengths and your weaknesses. your gabber soul, and that social fear, or whatever other "disorders" you might have.

and you have all the rights to show this to the outside world and tell others about this, and you will see, this will make you feel better.

and in the case that someone reacts like they can't handle your openness and honesty about your issues; then maybe *these* people are actually the true "weaklings"!

Rotjecore Records showcases Hardcore Techno from Colombia

Everyone knows the big Hardcore DJs, labels, and parties from the Netherlands; and everyone can probably name a few projects from countries such as France, UK, Germany, Italy, USA, Australia... and other nations in Europe.

But what lies beyond that? The rest of the world is often been overlooked when it comes to Hard electronic music.

One reason is that the medial focus in the western world is usually, well, only on "the west", and basically only on the "big players", such as those countries mentioned above.

Just like in the world of movies, the mainstream focus is to 95% on the big Hollywood productions, and is ignoring the rest.

But, apart from that "media bias", the truth is that there was very little "Hardcore Techno activity" in the rest of the world until recently - there was not much to report, not much to look at.

But this is quickly changing.

All around the globe new Hardcore scenes are emerging, producers are coming out of the dark, labels get created, blogs posts get written, and much, much more.

For example, a few months ago I heard of a Hardcore Techno release out of Iran.. that's definitely a first, and something wonderful!

But, after this lengthy introduction, let's get to the point:

Rotjecore Records released a double compilation that focuses purely on the emerging Colombian Hardcore scene. And it's verily something to behold!

The inspiration definitely seems to be Early Hardcore here, but the tracks really come in all variations; slow stuff, fast stuff, faster stuff; happy sounds, gabber sounds, terror sounds; hoovers, rap samples, guitars, rave sirens, chiptune.

Any hardcore connoisseur should find something he enjoys amongst these tracks.

So check them out now!

And, the best is yet to come: Rotjecore Records is planning several new compilations focusing on specific territories; Scandaniva and Germany are already in the works, but we dearly hope there will also be more unexpected stuff, like Hardcore from the Middle East or South East Asia.

DJ and Producer that is actually an Artificial Intelligence wants you to remix her tracks!

Just when you thought 2024 could not get any more surreal... here comes a techno-themed AI music remix competition.

This is a joint project by lAibyrinth, Omnicore Records, and The Hardcore Overdogs.
And without further ado, let's get straight to the information note by the label:

It's DJ AI

DJ AI is the world's first Artificial Intelligence Hardcore Techno DJ and producer. We released one album and 2 EPs by her so far on our label; and she had releases elsewhere as well.
That an AI is able to craft quality Hardcore and Techno is good; but if an AI collaborates with other producers, this is even better!
Thus we had the idea to do a remix compilation together with DJ AI!
All producers of all styles are called to take part.

So here are the details and rules:

DJ AI - Artificial Intelligence for Hardcore Techno Remix competition

1. If you are interested in remixing a track by DJ AI, let us know which track of hers you want to remix, and we will send you the stems for it.
Send the request to: low.entropy.80@gmail.com with the topic "DJ AI Remix competition".
If you are unsure about which track to chose, you can listen to her music at the following links:

https://technodjai.bandcamp.com/album/cosmic-loves-surreal-fusion-written-by-artificial-intelligence

2. The remix could be in any electronic music style. For example Techno, Acid, Gabber, Speedcore, Dark Ambient... maybe even Synthwave or Chiptune. There are no limits.

3. We will decide (together with DJ AI) which tracks get approved for the compilation.

4. Deadline for submitting tracks is 16.03.2024 23:59 CET (that's 11:59 P.M. for you US-Americans :)
No track submitted beyond that date will be accepted.

5. We don't do mastering. Your track does not need to be mastered, though. We assume that you are apt enough as a producer to create a decent track "as it is".
If you really want to submit a mastered track, you need to take care of that yourself.

6. The approved tracks will be released on a compilation on Omnicore Records.
It will be a DIY, digital-only, non-profit release.
The release will be set to "free (pay what you want)"* release on Bandcamp.
Should any money come in this way it will be donated to charity.
(*this is not in an attempt by us to generate money; we "need" to set it like that for a free release, otherwise there will be disadvantages by the website)

7. Tracks should be sent in .Wav format and as a download link to:
low.entropy.80@gmail.com
Topic "DJ AI Remix competition"

All other inquiries, questions and comments can be sent to that address as well.

Philosophical musings on the iconic cover artwork of the first Thunderdome compilation

The release of the first Thundercome compilation was one of the defining points in the history of hardcore; a liminal moment which set up a series - and essentially a "movement" - including spin-offs, labels, parties, merch, artists, and much more, that had a massive influence on the direction (and spread!) of Hardcore.

While this first release is iconic in and by itself, it is also known for its artwork, which is usually considered to be a highlight of the series (or cover arts as a whole) by enthusiasts of the Hardcore sound.

It inspired other artworks of other compilations, and is seen as something remarkable, and its probably stuck in the visual memory of countless of veterans of the 90s Gabber scene.

The iconic cover

So, let us take a closer look at this specific artwork. Because I assume that - just like Hardcore music in general - it goes much deeper than people generally perceive. I think there actually *is* something extremely unusual about this artwork, something that might evade the viewer's glance at first.

When regarding the artwork, a viewer who is a bit immature might say "Hee-hee, a naked woman, hee-hee".
While someone who is more mature might think "a well-crafted painting in a fantasy and horror style, emitting powerful emotions, obviously done by a skilled artist".

The first track from the first Thunderdome compilation

But we will do a closer examination.
First, let us look at the facts.

This painting was done by Boris Vallejo and is called "Vampire's Kiss". It was neither created or commissioned specifically for Thunderdome; Thunderdome "just" licensed and used it as the cover for their CD.
It was created in 1982 already, according to Boris Vallejo, for his book "Mirage".
Boris Vallejo is one of the best known artists in the world of fantasy; he did numerous iconic paintings.
And while "fantasy" art generally is very intricate and clever most of the times, Vallejo is known for incorporating - and hiding - even deeper philosophical themes in his art.

Now, let us look what we can see on the cover.

A woman is embracing, and apparently kissing, a vampire. The woman is in the nude; her body looks extraordinarily pretty, beautiful, alluring. The vampire, on the other hand, looks "like a monster"; vile, evil, disgusting, repulsive.

Another artwork by Vallejo

Let's ponder on the contents.
First, the depiction of nudity is not uncommon amongst fantasy and horror (and even scifi) art. This applies to the whole range of nudity; from "hints of nudity" and semi-nudity, to full body nudes, like on this art.
In fact, during the more prudish decades of the 20th century (and probably even before that), where the "female body" was generally censored, horror and fantasy art were amongst the only niches where nudity was somewhat of a common sight. Before the advent of internet shared porn, it was not unusual that teenagers resorted to watching horror movies for the purpose of "seeing some skin" (well, they likely still do).

"Demons to some, angels to others"

The depiction of vampires and other monster was a common theme of horror art, too, of course - it's its raison d'être, more or less!
So, this is not something uncommon or unexpected either.

Yet, usually, when both "women and evil monsters" were on the same cover, they were being chased, in a state of terror, or "cornered", with the monster approaching (just moments before the good hero arrives to save her...).
(Actually, this gave some artists an "excuse" to include the above-mentioned semi-nudity, by painting a protagonist, running away, with half-torn clothes.)

But, in this artwork, the woman neither seems terrorized or directly being threatened. She is apparently "kissing" the vampire out of free will. I.e. she is not the "dinner" for the vampire, but there seems to be a bond between them, physical, romantic, or of another kind. They form a potential couple.

Vallejo drew males, too

Now, in horror literature, this is not unusual either; monsters and villains often had their companions; witches that were lovers of demon-lords; monsters from mythology that had their female accomplices; and so on.

Yet, and in 99% of cases, these were then portrayed as being ugly and repulsive as well - at least to a degree.
Female witches with mean, evil, maddened expressions; female creatures that looked distorted and disfigured - the whole set of "female monsters".
But in this case, the woman looks very much to be of human origin, and extraordinarily beautiful.

Hellraiser is another media franchise that explores the connection of pleasure & pain

There is, of course, the possibility of seduction.
The idea that a woman might get seduced by a monster - in this case a vampire - is not a rare occurrence in horror media either. The vampire is definitely the "seducer" amongst the pantheon of fictional monsters, and literature or movies with charming, magnetic, seductive vampires are wide-spread - take Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in "Interview with the Vampire" for example.

But, in all these cases, the vampire in question does not have the appearance (or brutish behavior) of a "monster vampire". He appears as a very human gentleman, of beautiful and young looks, with the manners of a high aristocrat. Someone who would be considered charming and attractive by the majority of people.
But this vampire here does not have these attributes at all. As I said. He's ugly and repulsive.

Rare 3D Version of Vallejo's art

So, this is indeed a very rare motif in fantastic art.
We have neither a woman chased by a "monster vampire" here, nor a an evil entity with his just-as-evil female companion, nor a woman seduced by a creature disguised in a beautiful human form.

I think what we really have here is a union; a union of beauty and ugliness, or purity and deviance; a marriage of light and darkness, a bond between order and chaos, good and evil, life and death, growth and decay, innocence and immorality - and similar opposite themes.

It's like a yin and yang symbol a bit. An alternative name for Boris's art is "The Embrace" and, yes, I think that is what we have here.
A fusion of seemingly opposing states, a solution of a paradox, a way to combine things that seem to contradict each other.

The yin and yang is a traditional symbols of opposed forces that are joined with each other

And I think this is a very good representation of the Hardcore sound as well.
Because Hardcore goes beyond boundaries too, crosses straight through liminal territories;
Hardcore music joins ecstasy with inferno, the dark and the bright, love and hate, anger and serenity.
Hardcore adds the sweet to the brutal, and redemption to despair.
While Hardcore tracks sound like total, mindless, chaos to those outside that genre, its enthusiasts can verily see the order and rational structures in the tracks.
Hardcore is a fusion of intellect and instinct, intuition and logic, tradition and technology.
The first Hardcore tracks were compared to primitive drumming of stone age man by some critics, yet they were done on the most modern of technology at that time.
Just like the scene depicted on Boris Vallejo's cover art, the Hardcore sound rides across the false dichotomy of "light", "good" and "order" vs "evil, "darkness" and "chaos".

"Life is the result of the struggle between dynamic opposites
Form and Chaos, Substance and Oblivion, Light and Dark"

Hardcore, too, is a true embrace, of the purest and sweetest sentiments, and the lowest "filth". it encompasses the whole spectrum of the highest and lowest conditions of the human experience. It showcases pain, suffering, joy, pleasure; including the *pain in pleasure*.

So, in this sense, this iconic artwork, featured on the first Thunderdome, really was a visionary shape of sonic things to come in the Hardcore movement. And it serves as marvelous, and deep, symbolism of the tropes and thoughts behind the Hardcore sound as a whole.

Original Version of the artwork

1. As mentioned, T.H.C.O.D. is generally about the more overlooked, underrated aspects of the Hardcore culture.
Because of this, genres like Mainstyle, Uptempo, Frenchcore, etc etc. are not eligible for the magazine.
So ask yourself: has the object (artist, label topic...) that I want to submit been already extensively covered elsewhere (for example social media or other publications).
If this is the case, it probably has its proper place rather at that location, and not in our magazine.
The more obscure and out-there your thing is, the better!

2. We don't like Nazis or right-wing people, so if you want to submit stuff like that, then do not submit it.

3. There might be other reasons too, of course.

That being said, send all stuff to:

Topic should include "The Hardcore Overdogs"
You can also send general feedback or questions to that address.

And now... we are eagerly awaiting your material!

Best of Speedcore Mix 2023

Speedcore Network put up a mind-blowing mix made up of tunes that they consider to be among the best releases of the speedcore genre in 2023.

Check it out right now!

The owner of Speedcore Network gave us the following additonal information:

"Usually there is one mix per speedcore subgenre at the end of each year on the channel. This time, since it may be the last year for the channel, I decided to do things differently and upload one bigger mix.
It goes through different phases, but it's not like one subgenre after the next. You find plenty of Melodic Speedcore/Extratone throughout, for instance."

Speedcore Network was originally started in late 2013.

New release: The Man Unknown - Primitive Future

One of the most anticipated releases of 2024 so far has been finally released!
Of course we are talking about "Primitive Future" by The Man Unknown.
But nomen non est omen in this case - this Man should be far from being Unknown!
Having his roots in the 90s scene (when Hardcore and Speedcore were still taking form), he later did some marvelous releases in the Doomcore sector - on labels like Black Monolith, System Shutdown, or Dark.Descent.

So, The Man Unknown steps out of the shadow again - and we will continue this feature in his own words.

First, this is what his organisation has to say about the release.

"Primitive Future" by The Man Unknown
Step into the world of The Man Unknown with his latest E.P., "Primitive Future." This release marks a significant shift in his musical journey, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Back to the Roots with a Modern Twist
For the first time in two decades, The Man Unknown brings you a purely analog experience. "Primitive Future" is an homage to the raw, warm sounds of the '90s – a sound that digital mixing often struggles to replicate. By returning to analog recording and mixing, The Man Unknown captures the essence of a bygone era, delivering it with a modern sensibility.

Inside "Primitive Future"
This E.P. features four main tracks, pulsating at a dynamic 150bpm, designed to energize the dance floor with their dark, doom-laden rhythms. Accompanying these is a bonus track, a perfect sonic companion for long drives or travel, offering a different vibe from the rest.

Available Across Platforms
You can find "Primitive Future" on Bandcamp, Spotify, and other popular streaming services. For a visual taste of the E.P., check out the video shorts available on YouTube.

A Personal Note from The Man Unknown
This E.P. represents more than just new music; it's a personal milestone for The Man Unknown. It's about achieving a long-sought-after sound quality and aesthetic – a sound that's both primitive in its analog roots and futuristic in its contemporary execution.
Dive into "Primitive Future" and experience the unique blend of past and present, brought to you by The Man Unknown.

And these are further words by The Man Unknown about the release:

PURE ANALOG DOOM
This is my first release since two decades that is analog recorded AND mixed down on analog hardware. Before, I did already record everything through my mixing desk, but the mix was done digital on my computer. I always had the feeling that the final output is too thin and never met my own expectations. I really wanted to recreate that particular, warm, fat and slightly distorted sound we all enjoyed in the 90's, simply because there was no other way to do it than using hardware.

The result is a 4-tracker E.P. with an additional bonus track that I am really proud of as it redefined my workflow and finally has the sound aesthetics I was thriving for.

I hope you enjoy this release and I would love to hear how the tracks perform on the floor if you are a DJ!
